HISTORY
Silver-gold ore was discovered here in 1882, and in the early days several millions of dollars worth of ore was produced from the principal mine, the Garfield. In later years, the Mabel mine has been an important producer. Early production of the district is estimated at several million dollars in combined metals (Vanderburg, 1937b, p. 33). Production of gold from 1903 through 1957 was 4,933 ounces. Total gold production of the district through 1959 was probably between 10,000 and 50,000 ounces. The ore deposits are in quartz veins in volcanic rocks of the Excelsior Formation of Triassic and possible Permian ages and limestone of the Luning Formation of Triassic age (Ross, 1961, p. 82).
Past producers in this area include:
Garfield Mine: Primary: "Garfield Mine"
Secondary: "Eldorado Mining Co."
Secondary: "Great Western Atherton"
Secondary: "Bluelight Nbmg # 3591 #3592 #3593"
District: Garfield District
Elevation: 7,402 feet (2,256 meters)
Primary Mineral: Silver, Secondary: Lead, Gold
Lat, Long: 38.46667, -118.33333
Discovered in 1882, this type of mine consists of surface and underground workings, veins.
This historical claim has extensive workings of about 2 miles. It includes 13 or more claims, most of which are patented. Production varies, but from about 1880 to 1933, production was around $550,000, of shipped ore. The underground workings exposed three major vein systems that were interconnected and ranged in size from 3 inches to 9 feet.
Mabel Mine
Primary: Gold, Lead, Silver
District: Garfield District
Lat, Long: 38.45889, -118.32278
Type: Underground Workings
Deposit Type: Vein
In 1936 a portion of this mine above the 600-foot level was under lease to Lloyd Wilson, of Hawthorne and Associates. Much-faulted veins range from 3 inches to 3 feet in thickness. The veins are mostly rusty quartz in chert and quartzite, and contain pyrite, galena, and sphalerite. There is a 650-foot vertical shaft with levels at 100-foot intervals, and a winze 130-feet deep, that has been sunk from the 600-ffot level. Tons of ore worth $421,627 from 1922 to 1929, and $745,000 from 1922 to 1940.
COUNTY MINING INFORMATION:
Mineral County, as you might expect from the name, has a rich mining history. The vast majority of gold from this area has come from lode deposits, and as a byproduct of silver mining. The Aurora, Candelaria, Garfield, Gold Range, and Hawthorne Districts were all producers. Lots of old-timer workings can be found in this county.

Mina
Mina was founded as a railroad town in 1905 and was named for Ferminia Sarras, a large landowner and famed prospector known as the 'Copper Queen.' The Nevada & California Railway, a division of Southern Pacific Railroad, had a station in the town. The railroad is long gone, but at one time a local shuttle called the "Slim Princess" allowed Native Americans to ride for free on top of the railcars, and passengers and crew would shoot wild game such as jack rabbits, ducks and sage hens from the open windows. The train moved slow enough that hunters had time to retrieve their game and hop back on board.
Gee Jon and Hughie Sing were convicted of the August 27, 1921, Mina, Nevada murder of Tom Quong Kee and, as a result, Gee Jon, a 29-year-old member of the Hop Sing Tong, became the first person in the world executed by lethal gas. The execution was at the Nevada State Prison on February 8, 1924.
Sodaville was an earlier town and station on the Carson and Colorado Railway, about 4 miles (6 km) south of Mina. The Sodaville post office was active from October 9, 1882, until March 31, 1917, when its operations were moved to Mina. The Mina post office was established September 25, 1905. Mina was also served by the Tonopah and Goldfield Railroad.
ACCESS
General access to the area consists of taking 12th St. This road is pretty well maintained and good for 2WD. There will be a couple unnamed roads in the area in which to reach the claim. As with most of the claims in this area it is always best to travel with extra tires and make sure you have good clearance. We always recommend 4WD, specifically since this is a rugged, rocky area.
The area is full of dirt roads, so a good map and a good GPS unit is a must, but we'll show you exactly where it is on the map as well as provide you with the precise latitude and longitude of each corner marker, so finding it will not be a problem for you.
A couple of spare tires or an air compressor and patch kit or at least a couple of cans of tire sealant is strongly recommended for obvious reasons! Also, be sure to bring in whatever water you may need, as there are almost no water sources in the area 10 months out of the year.
Accessing the BLACK JACK MINE is fairly easy, but the last 1,500 ft. are a little rocky and we would recommend 4WD for a safer experience.
